ABU DHABI: There has been an increase in the use of virtual private networks (VPNs), in the UAE and Gulf states. Many VPNs can be used to access restricted websites such as gambling and dating sites, as well as to call via video-audio apps.

Nord Security data shows that the number of VPN users in the Gulf increased by 30% in the first quarter of 2015 compared to last year. There was an increase of 36% in the UAE. The majority of people use VPNs to access banned sites, according to the report.

Expats living in the Gulf countries often use VPNs to access popular video and audio apps such as WhatsApp, Facetime, and Discord. Nord Security also states that VPNs can be used to access porn sites, gambling websites, and VoIP websites.

Is VPN legal in Gulf?

According to guidelines from the government and Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority, VPN use in UAE is legal. Experts in the field have confirmed that on August 1, 2016, TDRA clarified that banks, institutions, and companies can use VPNs for internal purposes.

Misuse of VPN is a crime in the UAE. It is illegal to use a VPN to conceal your IP address or visit prohibited websites such as dating sites, gambling sites, and audio-video apps. A violation of Article 10 of UAE Cyber Law can lead to jail and fines of up to AED 500,000 to AED 2,000,000.
