The court ordered the youths to seize the boat used for this purpose and release the dolphins they caught to their natural habitat to prevent extinction.

Manama: A Bahraini court has fined three people $ 1,000 (2 lakh Indian rupees) for illegally catching dolphins in Bahrain. The senior prosecutor said they were convicted of illegally catching dolphins off the country’s territorial waters.

The verdict was handed down by the Major Criminal Court. The head of the ministry’s prosecution added that the court order was to seize the boat used by the youths and return the dolphins they caught to their natural habitat to prevent extinction.

Earlier, the lower court had acquitted all the three accused. The prosecution appealed against the verdict. The Bahraini Coast Guard has informed the public prosecution that the youths caught the dolphins illegally in violation of the country’s laws. According to local media reports, they handed over the captured dolphins to a group conducting dolphin shows.

Three dolphins were captured from them. The Chief Prosecutor added that the capture of dolphins is prohibited by the Bahraini constitution in order to protect the environment and natural resources.
