Dubai:GCC Rail Project Acceleration will open the door to a significant transformation in transport in the Gulf Countries. Rail travel between the Gulf countries will ease travel and freight and lower costs.

According to The Oxford Business Group, Oman will soon launch its Etihad project. This is in addition to the UAE’s rapidly growing Etihad project. After the six GCC countries had completed their work in their respective regions in 2018, the first decision was made to finish the first phase in 2018. However, the project could not proceed due to falling oil prices or the coup.

Already, the outline of each country’s railway line has been drawn. A number of investment projects will be initiated by the route that connects major cities, ports, and other strategic areas. The possibility of extending the route to 2,177 km or completing it in full may be explored. This route could be extended via Saudi Arabia to Jordan and via Kuwait to Iraq. Syria and Turkey are also targets. As Turkey enters the rail network through Jordan, it will be connected to Europe.

Rail project at GCC summit

At the GCC summit, the project was also discussed. The Omani delegation may have discussed the matter during their recent trip to Saudi Arabia. The Ruwi, Matra International Airport and the Metro linking the Zeeb region to the Muscat-Sohar Light Rail are also under consideration.

The Etihad project is moving along the Al Hajr Mountains, in the eastern coast region of Fujairah. Construction is nearing completion on the 600-meter-long bridge at Al Bitna. According to reports, the bridge will be connected to Saudi Rail once it is completed in the UAE. By 2024, the passenger train will be running in the UAE. It takes 50 minutes from Abu Dhabi to reach Dubai and 100 minutes to reach Fujairah.

Oman is a great achievement

The Oman Rail project’s most striking feature is its ability to connect the ports of Salalah Sohar and Dukham. These areas are important hubs for shipping to other countries.
