Dubai: The reign of Sheikh Khalifa bin Sultan proved why he deserved to follow in the footsteps of his far-sighted father. As his father taught and developed his own methods of governance, the UAE became one of the world’s leading nations.

He was stacking bright marbles on top of the foundation stones left by his father. He revealed in an interview that he had something to learn every day from his father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Sheikh Khalifa has said that he taught the importance of forgiveness and asked the citizens of the country to listen every day and understand their problems.

People close to Sheikh Khalifa say that he followed in his father’s footsteps to the end, listening to the citizens with an open mind. Sheikh Khalifa grew up in a school founded by his father. He came to power at the age of 57, but decades before that he had mastered the art of governing with his father. Sheikh Khalifa first came to power on September 18, 1966, at the age of eighteen.

That was when his father moved from Al Ain to Abu Dhabi. He was then appointed as the representative of the Eastern Region. Sheikh Khalifa was later crowned on February 1, 1969. He was later promoted to chairman of the Abu Dhabi Defense Department.

This later led to the formation of Abu Dhabi’s strong defense department. Sheikh Khalifa, who was promoted to the post of Prime Minister of Abu Dhabi on December 2, 1971, also took charge of the Ministry of Defense and Finance. He became chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council in 1974 and later became Deputy Prime Minister of the Federal Cabinet on December 23 of the same year.

He was the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the UAE during the formation of the UAE Joint Defense Force in 1976. In 1988, he became the Chairman of the Petroleum Council of Abu Dhabi. It also grew under Sheikh Khalifa to become the largest source of income in the world. Thus, he gradually developed the UAE by combining the lessons he learned from his father with his own skills.
