Sharjah: Children’s readers from all over the globe will be able to see sketches of characters who have made their way through their minds with mixed emotions at the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival. Hall No. The Reading Festival 6 features paintings by internationally renowned illustrators of children’s books. This is a creative feast for adults, children and anyone who loves painting, living in the story world.
This exhibition showcases famous paintings from 80 artists around the globe. A section is dedicated to UAE painters. Many of them visit the festival directly on different days, and then share their experiences with their children.
Successful Mexican painters
In a competition to choose the best paintings for the exhibition, Armando Fonseca from Mexico won the first prize. Second and third place went to Ukrainian painter Romana Romanishine and Mexican Amanda Mijangos Quiles. Consolation prizes were also awarded to Kyung Mi An, Agni Kaanaetini, a South Korean painter, and Noushan Sadakhen, an Iranian painter.
First prize for drawing for a Nobel Laureate book
Jose Saramango, a Portuguese Nobel Laureate, drew the pictures that won Amando Fonseca the first prize. It was a book about adventure, travel and childhood. Judges deemed that Iowa films created a new world for the reader.
Amanda Mijangos Quiles from Mexico won second place for her portrait of a girl in a dream book. Amanda’s photographs were described by the judges as if Amanda was a parent before going to bed. If Amanda were a child before falling into bed, the Iowa book would take her to the dream world.
Romana Romanshine, a Ukrainian painter, won the third prize for her book on travel in a time when everything was moving. The award-winning painters created colorful paintings for poetry or story collections.
UAE painters shine
A section is dedicated to UAE painters. Asma al Hosni and Asma becker, Asma Bin Kalban, Abdullah Awsa. Latifa A Ketbi, Maryam El Shamsi. Maita A Qayat. Nasir Nasrallah. These artists invite the audience to attend the show in one go.
The reading festival will end on the 22nd
Children can also interact with painters at the Sharjah Expo Centre and learn drawing techniques during the 13th Children’s Reading Festival. Monday through Thursday, 9am-8pm; Friday, 4pm-9pm; Saturday, 9am-9pm; Sunday, 9am-9pm. Admission is free.
